Bothy Ballads
A source Cd of songs from North East Scotland, as sung by the itinerant workers.
These songs were collected and prepared by the School of Scottish Studies in Edinburgh University and represent some of the best of the songs sung by the people of North East Scotland as they worked on the farms as labourers. When not working they spent their time playing music, swapping and writing songs. They were mostly unmarried men living in bothies (communal barn type accommodation) provided for the labourers as they moved from farm to farm according to the work that was needed at the time. Music from the North East sung by Jimmy MacBeath, James Bowie, Bill Elvin, John MacDonald, Charlie Murray and Jamie Taylor, Charlie Bremner and Frank Steele.

Waulking Songs from Barra
A source Cd from the Isle of Barra of waulking songs (Gaelic working songs for fulling hand made cloth)
In the Hebrides (Western Isle of Scotland) a whole class of undoubtedly ancient songs have survived. Many of these labour songs were recorded between 1965 -67 in Barra from the older tradition bearers in the community. The fulling or waulking the hand made cloth was carried out in Gaelic speaking Scotland by pounding by hand or trampling the cloth with the feet - the process was called a luadh in Gaelic. These are very rhythmic working songs which tell stories and give community information old and new whilst continuing a useful task and keeping the workers in rhythm. Featuring Mary Morrison, Calum Johnston, Kate Buchanan and Flora Boyd. 1993)

Robh thu sa bheinn? (Were you in the Mountains?) / Mo run Ailein (My Love Alan); Ho ro hug o hug o; Latha siubhal beinne dhomh (One Day as I Roamed the Hills); A bhean as thall a rinn an gaire (Woman Over There Who Laughed); An fhideag airid (The Silver Whistle); Is moch an diugh a rinn mi gluasad (Early Today I Set Out)

Yont the Tay
"Jim Reid is regarded as one of Scotland’s finest singers” (The Scotsman)
Jim was a founder member of the legendary Foundry Bar Band, after an apprenticeship in various Scottish groups including The Taysiders. His interest in the travelling folk is well known and he had a very special relationship with the late Belle and Alex Stewart of Blairgowrie. Jim Reid is without a doubt an outstanding singer and songwriter, and as a lover of the work of poet Violet Jacob, has set many of her poems to music, including the hugely successful Wild Geese (or Norland Wind), which has now become one of the classic folk songs of the twentieth century. Some of Scotland's finest musicians session with Jim on this album - Aaron Jones (cittern), Sandy Brechin (accordion), Marc Duff (whistle, recorder), Malcolm Stitt (bouzouki), Frank McLaughlin (guitar) and Ian Anderson (vocals).

Daft Donul * Up The Noran Water * Mormon Braes * Baron O Brackley * Tommy Curtiss * Harlaw * The Tinkler’s Weddin * Cairn O Mount * The Freedom Come All Ye * Bonnie Joann * The Band O Shearers * The Sodger’s Cairn * Sleepytoun * Bonnie Moorhen * The Wild Geese.
