At Flodden, 12 miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, on 9 Septermber 1513, the invadiong army of the Scottish King James IV suffered overwhelming defeat at the hands of the Earl of Surrey's English army. Alongside the king and many leaders of great Scottish families, over 10,000 young men 'the flowers of the forest', renowned for their beauty and strength perished.
