Burns took the old ballad 'I'll gang nae mair to yon toun' and whimsically reversed the intention there expressed. His future wife Jean Armour is the 'Bonny Jean' referred to in the poem. The tune is that of the original ballad. It was first printed in 'Bremner's Scots Reels' of 1757.
