The bonny Earl o' Moray (sheet music)
This poem recalls a lurid period of Scottish history, when high passion, jealousy, and intrigue were rife among members of the nobility, with murder a frequent consequence. The Earl of Moray had may enemies due to long standing feuds which eventually lead to his death by numerous assassins. His mother Lady Doune took his body and laid it before the king, James VI, who chose to ignore it and the assassins because of a private hatred instigated when he overheard the Queen praising Moray as 'a proper and gallant man'.
