Bonny Strathayre (sheet music)

A pleasing concoction from the pen of Sir Harold Boulton, a Victorian composer, versifier, and musicologist. In 'Songs of the North' edited by MacLeod and Boulton (1855), it is stated that the tune is adapted from an old air 'Taymouth'. Those familiar with the jig 'The muckin' o' Geordie's byre' will detect a strong similarity. Boulton may have, as it were, found the tune in a cowshed, but having subjected it to a little judicious laundering he was able quite happily to introduce it to the Victorian drawingroom.
