Ho-ro, my nut-brown maiden (sheet music)

John Stuart Blackie (1809-1895) who translated the Gaelic words of this old Highland air, was Professor of Humanity (i.e. Latin) at the University of Aberdeen and subsequently Professor of Greek at Edinburgh University. Among his many interests were the teaching of Gaelic and the translation of traditional Gaelic songs. In Greig's 'Scots Minstrelsie' (1892-1895) the Gaelic poet is named as 'Mr. Sinclair', but no other details are given.
