Tom Hughes (biography)

Tom Hughes (1907 - 1986) from the Borders, was born on a farm estate near St Boswells. His father and grandfather both played fiddle. He didn’t learn to read music and picked up the tunes in his family tradition. Tom’s style, though distinctly Scottish, is quite different from other styles and follows in the tradition of Pate Baillie of Liberton (late 17th century) with its liberal use of double stopping. Through his playing an insight can be gained into Border fiddle style stretching back well into the 19th Century.
