The Caledonian Pocket Companion (book)

These CD ROMs contain volumes one and two (Books 1-12).

The collection is one of the most important 18th century collections of Scottish tunes, with several pieces appearing in print for the first time. Oswald's early experience as a fiddle and dancing master appears to have played a vital formative role in the compilation of this rich and varied assortment of melodies.

It was issued separately in 12 books between 1745-1760.

These two volumes are reproduced here in modern computer typeset notation as well as a facsimile copy. A new and extensive introduction to the work and it's compiler, along with fascinating notes concerning the history and origins of each tune, make this CD ROM an essential tool for anyone interested in the history and performance of Scots music.

These CD ROMs are suitable for any PC or MAC running freely available Acrobat Reader software. Version 6. or above is recommended.

Reviews

“This publication is, therefore, one of the most important we have to date for musicians, scholars and lovers of Scottish music . . . . It is the result of a long labour of love and well worth its very modest price to have such invaluable source material, so beautifully prepared, in everyone’s hands for the first time in over 250 years. Oswald would certainly have applauded.”

Ian Olson, “Music Maestro”, The Scots Magazine, September 2007
