Waulking Songs from Barra (album)

A source Cd from the Isle of Barra of waulking songs (Gaelic working songs for fulling hand made cloth). In the Hebrides (Western Isle of Scotland) a whole class of undoubtedly ancient songs have survived. Many of these labour songs were recorded between 1965 -67 in Barra from the older tradition bearers in the community.

The fulling or waulking the hand made cloth was carried out in Gaelic speaking Scotland by pounding by hand or trampling the cloth with the feet - the process was called a luadh in Gaelic. These are very rhythmic working songs which tell stories and give community information old and new whilst continuing a useful task and keeping the workers in rhythm.

Featuring Mary Morrison, Calum Johnston, Kate Buchanan and Flora Boyd.
