Burns himself identified Jean Lorimer as the heroine of these verses. The tune, and the first four lines, are traditional. An early version of Burns's poem was published in 'The Scots Musical Museum' of 1788, and the revised song was printed in the 'Select Collection of Original Scotish (sic) Airs' of 1799.
